How to Make Your Own Magical Galaxy Dresser

A while back, I wrote about how I made some galaxy nightstands. Now, I’m ready to share my galaxy dresser!

As I mentioned in my previous post, our furniture, while functional, didn’t really feel like it was “ours” yet. Personally, I feel like if anything you own doesn’t make you 100% happy, you should feel free to change it or get rid of it without feeling guilty.

Here is the before and after:

Materials:

Process:

The first thing I did was remove the hardware. Then, I sanded off the original finish. After sanding, I painted the dresser with some black chalk paint.

After painting the dresser black, I popped the drawers back in and placed some painters tape in between the drawers. For this dresser, I wanted the galaxy to be one continuous piece. I painted cloud-like formations that started in one drawer and flowed into the next. I also dipped a paint brush into some white acrylic paint and flicked it to create some stars.

As mentioned in my previous post, Unicorn Spit looks chalky at first. However, after sealing it with the Rust-oleum top coat, it becomes much more vibrant:

I ended up alternating between sealing and painting a few times until I was satisfied with the results, and then added a final layer of sealer. I also touched up any necessary spots with some black chalk paint.

Then it was time to start putting it all back together! Initially, I planned on using the original hardware that came with the dresser. It was black, which blended in perfectly, and I didn’t want to spend money if I didn’t have to. However, when attempting to put the hardware back in, it snapped and completely broke.

I had to buy a whole new set. I was a little annoyed at first but then I realized it was an opportunity to find hardware that better complemented our new dresser. After spending some time browsing the different options online, I decided on these black bar pulls:

In total, this took about 6-8 hours spread out over a couple of weeks. It was incredibly fun and rewarding, too. I’m looking forward to future furniture makeover projects!
