How to Find the Magic When It Feels Like the Whole World is Falling Apart

It’s hard not to feel a little defeated these days when it comes to current events and world affairs. There are some awful things happening and sometimes it feels like there isn’t anything you can really do about it.

I find it incredibly overwhelming to be alive sometimes. Bad things happen and we’re constantly reminded about it. It’s not a bad thing to be informed, but it can definitely bring you down sometimes.

Some of these issues are so vast. They won’t be solved over night. As one individual, it’s very easy to feel like you have no power or impact.

But the truth is that we all have a bit of magic inside of us. It may not feel like it, but we do. The small actions we take, collectively, can have a big impact. Our small actions can inspire others to act. That’s magic!

These are just some suggestions for how you can still find and create some magic in the world:

  • Compliment a Friend: Call or text a friend you haven’t seen in a while or surprise them with snail mail. Let them know why you value your friendship and why the world is a better place with them in it. Trust me, it’ll make their day.
  • Seek Out Positive News: Sites like the Good News Network share positive and inspiring stories. This isn’t to say you should ignore bad news, but a reminder that good things are happening, too!
  • Create Art: Channel all the emotions you’re feeling into an artistic endeavor. You don’t have to be “good” at it – the point is to just make something. And there are many ways to do art. (I like to crochet!)
  • Be a Mentor: Chances are that you have skills, talents, and knowledge you can share with the world. Help someone the way you wish someone helped you!
  • Volunteer: Find a cause you’re passionate about. Whether it’s working with kids, socializing animals at the shelter, or organizing a clean up project, there are so many ways you can make a difference. Not only will you make an impact, you’ll feel good about it, too.

Ask yourself: what can I do to make the world a more magical place?
