How to Travel the World with Universal Yums
I had so many fun trips planned last year that I had to cancel because of the pandemic. I was finally debt-free and looking forward to being able to splurge on these experiences. While I knew that travel would eventually resume, there was still a sense of loss from having to postpone these long awaited trips.
One of my favorite parts about traveling is trying new foods. Since I couldn’t travel, I started thinking about other ways I could still learn about food and culture. When I came across Universal Yums, an international snack box subscription, I decided to give it a shot. Each month you get a box from a different country filled with snacks and candy, along with information about that country.
There are 3 plans you can choose from:
- Yum Box: 5-7 snacks, 12 page booklet (~$15)
- Yum Yum Box: 10-12 snacks, 16 page booklet, additional bonus content like recipes (~$25)
- Super Yum Box: 18-20 snacks, 16 page booklet, additional bonus content ($39)
I decided to splurge on the Super Yum Box. You can never have too many snacks, right?
I’ve actually paused my subscriptions a few times because I haven’t eaten all the snacks from the 3 boxes I’ve received. The first box was Colombia, the second box was a holiday edition that featured snacks from different European countries, and the most recent box was full of snacks from The Netherlands.
In addition to the snacks, I really enjoy the booklets because they’re filled with tons of facts about each country and include recipes, trivia, and details about each snack.
I won’t say this is the same as traveling to a new country, but it’s a fun surprise to see what each month’s box is going to be and learning fun facts about each country. As far as pandemic traveling goes, it’s pretty safe!
Depending on your palate, the snacks are hit or miss. Each box actually comes with a sheet where you can rank each snack and rate your favorite yum, the worst yum, and the weirdest yum. You can compare your ratings with others in your household, too. If there’s a particular snack you really like, you might be able to buy it from the Universal Yums Shop, too. They individually sell whichever snacks are the most popular.
In terms of value, you have to look at it beyond the snacks. You’re paying for a curated experience. As for how authentic that experience is, I can’t really say because I’ve never been to any of these countries.
