How to Give Yourself a Magical Fruit Bath

Have you ever taken a fruit bath?

I was watching Pen15 a while back (I highly recommend watching if you’re looking for a show that will make you laugh) and was intrigued by a scene where Maya, one of the main characters, takes a bath with fruit slices in the water.

After some Googling, I learned about the Japanese tradition of taking Yuzu baths on the winter solstice: this involves cutting up yuzu (a citrus fruit from East Asia) and adding the slices to your bath water. There are various health and beauty benefits from the fruit, and this tradition is also believed to bring good luck for the new year.

I know it’s not the winter solstice yet, but I was inspired to try this out anyway. It’s been a stressful couple of years living through this pandemic and self-care rituals have helped me hold on to my sanity. I didn’t have easy access to yuzus, so I used other citrus fruits like oranges and lemons. I also threw a blue bath bomb in there.

Here’s how to have your own magical fruit bath:

All you do is slice up your fruits, add them and any other items to your bath water, and get in. Then you soak for as long as you need (I aim for at least 20-30 minutes).

Fruits you might use:

  • Grapefruits
  • Limes
  • Lemons
  • Oranges
  • Strawberries

Other items you might add:

  • Bath bombs
  • Epsom salts
  • Herbs
  • Flowers
  • Milk

Other ways to set the vibe:

  • Candles
  • Incense
  • Crystals
  • Music (I’ve been all about this Dopamine playlist on Spotify)
  • A book
  • A drink (water, tea, wine etc.)

Fruit Bath Benefits

Do I have the energy to prepare this kind of bath all the time? Probably not. Do I think it’s worth trying every once in a while as a pick me up? Absolutely. The fruits gave off a pleasant scent and I noticed my skin felt really soft after. Mostly though, it was beneficial to take time to do something nice for myself.

If I’m being honest, taking time for myself is something I’ve struggled with. I have a tendency to put others’ needs before my own. This often results in me feeling tired and run down, and sometimes I feel guilty for doing something “relaxing” when I could be doing something “productive” (thanks, capitalism). This is something I’ve been actively working on because I know I’m my best self when I take care of myself, and it’s okay to put myself first. Also, resting and relaxing IS being productive.

All this to say, I highly recommend you give yourself a magical fruit bath. It’s pretty easy and there are various benefits which include relaxation, improved circulation, and smoother skin. Try it out and let me know what you think.
