3 Cool Spots to Check Out in Birmingham: The Magic City

I had the pleasure of exploring Birmingham, Alabama with my brother for his birthday. Why Birmingham, Alabama? My brother lives in Montgomery but felt that Birmingham would have more to offer in terms of things to do and explore. Also, it’s known as “The Magic City!”

It was also a great opportunity to explore a city that was new to both of us. I had been once before – but in high school – which feels like a lifetime ago.

This is by no means an exhaustive list. Birmingham has a LOT to offer.

Saturn Birmingham: This is a space-themed live music venue, coffee shop, AND bar. We only really checked out the coffee shop and bar – but we were blown away by the decor and ambiance. What’s not to love about being able to play every video game console imaginable? We were able to relive so many of our childhood memories, which in itself is pure magic.

Birmingham Botanical Gardens: Not only are the gardens completely FREE to enjoy, they are MASSIVE. My favorite part of the gardens were the bamboo forests. It’s just a special kind of whimsy for me. I also enjoyed the various hiking trails. It was a nice spot to walk and talk and literally stop to enjoy the scenery.

Birmingham Museum of Art: This place is also FREE to enter. The exhibits and collections are impressive. I really enjoyed the Barbie exhibit, as it offered the opportunity to immerse myself in a reimagined dream house while examining the cultural and personal impact Barbie had.
